NBC SPORTS: Figure Skating Championship

A popular jazz adage has it that "it's the notes you don't play that make the difference." That statement best describes our latest project for NBC Sports, a promo package for the network's broadcast of the US Figure Skating Championships. We used footage of the skaters in poetic action as the base for our kaleidescope-inspired animations, then elegantly added a wintery color palette, crisp typography, and simple lines to compliment the beauty of the skaters without overdoing it. To achieve the timeless elegance of the compositions, we opted for anti-technology techniques throughout production... shooting real macro photography of ice instead of creating digital ice-y effects, forgoing the filters and trickery for a more limited set of anti-technology tools, using restraint and a quiet design language throughout.
